Wine Tasting
In the time of Ancient Roman rule, Puglia was the Empire’s wine cellar. When the Romans were building their Empire many expeditions left from the port of Brindisi where farewell parties were held in honor of those departing. So, “fare un Brindisi” (to make a Brindisi) in Italian, means to make a toast.
Today, Puglia is still the region of Italy with the highest yield of wine in the country. However, until recently, the wines were not of very good quality for many years, producers preferring to concentrate on quantity rather than quality.
This is now changing. Some of Puglia’s wine producers have been courageous enough to invest more money, time and effort into improving the vine quality and modernising the production methods in order to improve the quality of the wine. Many of these brave producers are based in the Salento area.
This would also explain my confusion 10 years ago, around why these lovely wines lacked International notoriety. It is only in the last few years that the wines from Puglia are beginning to be considered by the serious wine world.
I had problems in deciding which companies to include in the Watts Cooking adventure, they’re all so good!
